Colleges and universities around the world engaged diverse strategies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Baylor University, a community of ˜22,700 individuals, was 1 of the institutions which resumed and sustained operations. The key strategy was establishment of multidisciplinary teams to develop mitigation strategies and priority areas for action. This population-based team approach along with implementation of a “Swiss Cheese” risk mitigation model allowed small clusters to be rapidly addressed through testing, surveillance, tracing, isolation, and quarantine. These efforts were supported by health protocols including face coverings, social distancing, and compliance monitoring. As a result, activities were sustained from August 1 to December 8, 2020. There were 62,970 COVID-19 tests conducted with 1435 people testing positive for a positivity rate of 2.28%. A total of 1670 COVID-19 cases were identified with 235 self-reports. The mean number of tests per week was 3500 with approximately 80 of these positive (11/d). More than 60 student tracers were trained with over 120 personnel available to contact trace, at a ratio of 1 per 400 university members. The successes and lessons learned provide a framework and pathway for similar institutions to mitigate the ongoing impacts of COVID-19 and sustain operations during a global pandemic.

Objective: To report the occurrence, clinical characteristics and genealogical analysis of multiple sclerosis in the Hutterites of North-Western United States and Western Canada. Background: The incidence of multiple sclerosis is reported to be lower or rare in certain ethnic groups and genetic isolates and was previously observed to be absent in the Hutterite population. Methods: After long-term surveillance, six patients were identified and clinical examinations and laboratory investigations including VER and MRI were completed. Results: The six cases included two brothers, two first cousins, male and female, another male and female, all representing two of the three endogamous groups of Hutterites, are linked to two common ancestors through lines of descent dating to 1723. The individual pedigrees were analyzed from extensive genealogical records covering eight generations. Conclusion: The incidence of multiple sclerosis in Hutterites is low in a high risk area of North America. A specific mode of inheritance pattern has not been established and a common founder effect may play a role in the development of multiple sclerosis. The genetic contribution of the Hutterites seems greater than previously recognized.

This review discusses neurobiological studies of oppositional defiant disorder and conduct disorder within the conceptual framework of three interrelated mental domains: punishment processing, reward processing, and cognitive control. First, impaired fear conditioning, reduced cortisol reactivity to stress, amygdala hyporeactivity to negative stimuli, and altered serotonin and noradrenaline neurotransmission suggest low punishment sensitivity, which may compromise the ability of children and adolescents to make associations between inappropriate behaviors and forthcoming punishments. Second, sympathetic nervous system hyporeactivity to incentives, low basal heart rate associated with sensation seeking, orbitofrontal cortex hyporeactiviy to reward, and altered dopamine functioning suggest a hyposensitivity to reward. The associated unpleasant emotional state may make children and adolescents prone to sensation-seeking behavior such as rule breaking, delinquency, and substance abuse. Third, impairments in executive functions, especially when motivational factors are involved, as well as structural deficits and impaired functioning of the paralimbic system encompassing the orbitofrontal and cingulate cortex, suggest impaired cognitive control over emotional behavior. In the discussion we argue that more insight into the neurobiology of oppositional defiance disorder and conduct disorder may be obtained by studying these disorders separately and by paying attention to the heterogeneity of symptoms within each disorder.

Gene therapy approaches have great promise in the treatment of neurodegenerative disorders and malignant brain tumors. Neuwelt et al. review available viral-mediated gene therapy methods and their blood-brain-barrier (BBB) disruption delivery technique, briefly mentioning nonviral mediated gene therapy methods. This commentary discussed the BBB disruption delivery technique, viral and nonviral mediated gene therapy approaches to Parkinson's disease, and the potential use of antisense oligo to suppress malignant brain tumors.

Summary
All theories are false (Popper, 1959). So in one sense evaluating theories is a straightforward matter. However, some theories are more false than others. Furthermore, some theories have characteristics that tend to promote the advance of scientific knowledge. In this chapter, we examine what some of those characteristics are and how one goes about the process of identifying and building useful theories.
A theory is a concise statement about how we believe the world to be. Theories organize observations of the world and allow researchers to make predictions about what will happen in the future under certain conditions. Science is about the testing of theories, and the data that we collect as scientists should either implicitly or explicitly bear on theory.
There is, however, a great difference between theories in the hard sciences and theories in the soft sciences in their formal rigor. Formal theories are well established and incredibly successful in physics, but they play a lesser role in biology, and even less in psychology, where theories are often stated in verbal form. This has certainly been true historically, but some scientists, especially physicists, as well as laypeople, construe this fact to mean that formal theories are restricted to the hard sciences, particularly physics, while formalization is unattainable in the soft sciences. There is absolutely no reason to think so. Indeed, this is a pernicious idea that would permanently relegate psychology to second-class status.

Summary
OCULAR INJURY
Ocular injuries may occur as a result of thermal, radiation, chemical or physical insults. If the eye or periorbital region is involved in the injury, proper assessment, including a detailed history, visual acuity testing, pupillary responses, external eye surface inspection and the inner eye structures examination, must be carried out.
If retained intraocular foreign body is suspected, appropriate investigations should be performed. These include standard, orbital, plain film radiographs to detect radioopaque foreign bodies. Computed tomography (CT) with axial and coronal cuts is helpful in the evaluation of both intraocular and periocular structures as well as the presence or degree of periocular damage. It may also show whether a patient has sustained an intracranial injury, such as subdural haemorrhage. Ultrasound is useful to localize nonmetallic intraocular foreign bodies and detect choroidal haemorrhage, posterior scleral rupture, retinal detachment and subretinal haemorrhage.
Details regarding the setting of the injury are important and give an idea of what to look for and exclude in the physical examination.
The equipment required to perform an initial eye examination includes: vision card, penlight, topical anaesthetic eye drops, direct ophthalmoscope, sterile fluorescein strips, gauze, eye pads, eye shields, Q-tips and irrigating solution.
Topical anaesthetic may be needed to control the pain and discomfort before physical examination can begin. However, if an open injury of the globe is evident or suspected, it is important not to instill such medications in order to prevent toxicity to the intraocular structures.
Is the Cromwell current driven by equatorial Rossby waves?

A second-order theory for equatorial, baroclinic Rossby waves in a bounded ocean yields, among other components, terms of zero frequency. We inquire whether the associated rectified flow (or ‘streaming’, or ‘mass transport’) can be related to the submerged equatorial jet observed by Cromwell, Knauss and others. For quite reasonable models of baroclinic Rossby waves, the resultant streaming can be sharply concentrated at the equator, and varies in depth as N(z), thus giving maximum flow at the thermocline (where the Väisälä frequency N(z) is largest). In this way the rectification hypothesis might account for the observed submerged equatorial steering of the Cromwell current. The observed direction of streaming calls for a predominance of equatorially symmetric Rossby waves. The observed magnitude implies that the r.m.s. fluctuations be of the same order as the mean current; that is to say, we have applied weakinteraction theory to a strong-interaction problem. There are other difficulties.

This month Mycological Research News features a report of an extraordinary richness of undescribed truffle-like fungi in Australia, and an explanation of why mycologists should always deposit voucher specimens and cultures to enable their work to be validated, co-authored by 18 mycologists.
Amongst the 21 papers included in this issue are three on the biocontrol of insect pests by Erynia and Metarhizium species, including methods of application and longevity of conidial preparations. Biomass estimations by ergosterol in decomposing leaves in the Everglades, and by chitin in Crinipellis infections on cacao are described. Variation in Phytophthora infestans provides evidence of heterokaryons, conidial production in Colletotrichum acutatum is favoured by monsoon conditions, and the conidia of Pestalotiopsis neglecta inhibit other fungi. Six papers on mycorrhizas address competition with saprobic fungi and other ectomycorrhizal species, the characterization of a chitin synthase, variation at the molecular level in two endomycorrhizal fungi, a culture technique, and the early response of tobacco roots to colonization. Amongst other papers are ones characterizing a protease in Schizophyllum, describing incompatability groups in Pleurotus tuberregium, and showing different Venturia species attack different pears.
The following new scientific names are introduced: Pseudohelicomyces gen. nov.; Anthostomella acuminata, A. applanata, A. caffrariae, A. colligata, A. meerensis, A. palmae, A. raphiae, A. spiralis, Pseudohelicomyces albus, Ramulispora cerealis, and Trichoderma stromaticum spp. nov.

Although current observations and theoretical models indicate that galaxy mergers and interactions are catalysts in the process of galaxy evolution, we have only a limited quantitative understanding of some basic aspects of the process. For example, the rate at which galaxies merge is poorly constrained. We can simplify the problem by considering only disk galaxies, which because of the fragility of their disks (cf. Tóth and Ostriker 1992) have presumably not suffered a major merger. Even so, these galaxies have almost certainly experienced the infall of small companion galaxies at some time. The Milky Way is currently experiencing the accretion of the Sagittarius dwarf (Ibata, Gilmore, & Irwin 1994) and will eventually accrete the Magellanic Clouds (Tremaine 1976). To understand how galaxies evolve, we need to have quantitative knowledge of the accretion rate as a function of mass for all types of galaxies. Here we consider only the accretion of companion galaxies (~ 10% by mass) onto large spiral galaxies.
